Welcome to Welgegund
Come and discover wine country that is quintessentially Tuscan, in the heart of the Boland. Just as vines created and shaped a distinctive Mediterranean culture since Roman times, so they have woven their magic here in a tucked-away corner of the Western Cape. Nestled in the Hawequa mountains at the end of an oak-lined cul-de-sac in Wellington is Welgegund. This family-owned boutique wine estate rejoices in its South African roots whilst embracing the savoir-faire of the awakening Continent.
Welgegund means well-bestowed - in German "Wohlgegoennt" - and you don’t have to venture far to experience the fruits of its blessings. For the past decade the estate has been producing award-winning premium wines. In the Mediterranean, wine is a way of life and it is this philosophy that is celebrated at Welgegund. A passion for the land and its produce is savoured in every bottle. It is this character that inspires us at Welgegund; not just in our variety of Mediterranean grapes but in our landscape, our lifestyle and the joie de vivre it brings to our wine making.
Welgegund was the first farm in South Africa to actively propagate Carignan, a southern French grape variety of Spanish origin. This cultivar now constitutes an important component of our signature wine - Ricco.
At Welgegund, we invite you to sip, savour and celebrate the Mediterranean way of life. Food and wine are synonymous with the hospitality of the Southern European experience. Tables overflow with the bounty of the land and flavours are robust and uncomplicated. The pace is languid with an open invitation to enjoy home and hearth. Above all, the emphasis is on quality, taking the time to appreciate the brightness of the sky, the fruits of the vine; revelling in single, glorious moments.
A visit to Welgegund, a scenic 50 minute drive from Cape Town, is a must for connoisseurs and wine lovers. |
